We Care about your Eyecare at Bright Optics, Rotherham.

There's more to an eye test than what you see.

Most people would decribe their vision as their most precious sense. Here at Bright Optics we do all we can to keep your eyes healthy and your vision at its best. Regular eye tests not only ensure clear vision, but also monitor for signs of disease such as Cataracts, Glaucoma and Macula Degeneration. They can also be useful in detecting systemic disease such as High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol or Diabetes.

What happens in an eye test?

At Bright Optics, all our eye tests are carried out in line with the College of Optometrists guideline. The college ensures that eye tests are carried out to the highest standard, for more information click here to view their website; Lookafteryoureyes.org. As per college guidelines, we only carry out tests that are clinically necessary, so you may not have all the tests on the list, but you can rest assured we are doing everything to keep your eyes healthy.

History and Symptoms

This is where we find out what problems you are having if any. We will ask lifestyle and health questions to ensure we understand the issues you are having or in some cases pick up on potential problems that may not have become apparent yet.

Ocular Motor Balance

Ocular Motor Balance means checking your eyes are working together properly. This may involve alternately covering your eyes and checking how they move if at all. Sometimes it can be checked using special targets and filters if we need more information.

Refraction

Refraction involves finding out what you can see with and without existing glasses, finding your up to date prescription and ensuring your vision is the best it can be. We will determine what kind of glasses you need if any.

Eye health check

An eye test involves checking the health of both inside and outside of the eye using a slit lamp or an ophthalmoscope or a combination of the two. Sometimes we need to put drops in if you have small pupils or if we want to have a closer look at something.

Intra Ocular Pressure

This is the Glaucoma check, although it can be useful in detecting other issues. We measure the pressure inside the eye. This is particularly important if a relative has Glaucoma however would only generally be done on patients over 30 unless indicated by symptoms.

Visual Fields

Visual Fields test can also be used for monitoring Glaucoma but is also useful in monitoring the whole visual system. We may also do a fields test if you are reporting headaches, flashes or floaters.

Colour Vision

Colour vision is generally only tested in children unless somebody reports specific symptoms. Colour vision defects or colour blindness is usually stable, affects patients from birth and disproportionately affects boys. Generally it will only be carried out at the patients first test.

Stereopsis

Stereopsis is another way to test how well your eyes work together, generally it is carried out on children but it checks your depth perception, ensuring our patients can see in 3D. This is particularly useful in children and is a relatively simple way to check for weakness in one eye.
